TEACHING YOU HOW TO GROW, COOK & PRESERVE!
Detailed + clear instructions for modern-day homesteading.
Detailed + clear instructions for modern-day homesteading.
He digs; I cook: Behind the Homestead
Sharing snippets of our life and seasonal homesteading tips!
We are child-free homesteaders living on 20 acres in beautiful Wisconsin. Here’s a look at our week as spring is springing…
A NOTE:
I originally started specifying “child free” in my “day-in-the-life” videos to be transparent. I never want anyone to feel like they’re not doing enough, especially if they have young kids.
However, what I learned is that there’s a subset of homesteaders out there who often feel left out in this community. The “typical” homesteader has children, maybe even a lot of them. And as people who don’t, our life looks different. It can be hard to relate sometimes, even though we have so many other things in common.
So if you are homesteading WITHOUT kids: welcome! Turns out there’s a bunch of us!
If you are homesteading WITH kids: I think you are amazing! I’m in awe of you!
I love my life, and I love being able to share a different perspective here. Please know I am throwing absolutely zero shade at people with children. I’m always happy for anyone living the life they wanted, no matter what it looks like. 💗

STORING CARROTS for SIX MONTHS without a root cellar!

STORING CARROTS for SIX MONTHS without a root cellar!
$750 for home-grown produce most of the year is a steal. I spend that much in two months feeding a family of 5
Where did u get the pots?
Definitely less than me. Im thinking about the metal pot maker cutters. Do u use landscape fabric? Where are u located?
For less than 2 dollars a day
I don’t have Time for the gold standard method I just crush a tomato in a strainer and spray it with the water hose, -dump the seeds onto a paper plate or paper towel and let them dry - takes 1 minute
Where did you get your pots? I need some deep pots that fit in my 1020 trays for a few things that outgrow my soil blocks too fast
The cost is going to depend on what your garden is for. A beginner starting out doesn’t need to spend this. Till the ground and plant in the ground from seed. Start with just a couple fruits/veggies that you like. Build up from there every year.
Thank you for the tips. Wondering if you ever tried separate the white from the yolk and freeze them separately. Would it be any different to fry them?
I love your garden/tomatoes. I was just thinking of how to extract tomatoes seeds to be used for seedlings and I saw your video. Thanks so much.
Nice to see fruition seeds. That’s the only thing o splurge on.
Thanks. I have 5dz in the fridge. ill do this TODAY!
thank you very informative cheers
Feeding you fresh veggies from June to November, but if you can all your excess, you would be able to eat that the rest of the year. So the start up costs can be pricey, but in the long run, I think it saves you money. It’s not costing me that much though. I got all my seeds from Amazon, which weren’t that much. I am repurposing some things like extra wood that I had laying around to make Bed and thankfully, we have composting area in town that I can go get free soil from. It would be worth it to look into your local area and see if you have one as well. The rest is mostly labor I’ve gotten tools secondhand. I’ve also gotten some stuff off of Temu like grow bags, which were pretty inexpensive. So there’s ways that you can do things cheaper on a budget.
What about watering costs?
200 on seeds?! You gotta be able to cut that significantly 😅
It can be done much cheaper
It’s much less than I thought!
Unfortunately the cost is often in the land and taxes. If you live somewhere where thats not an issues, then its very economical. In costly areas of NY, CA, you are not getting the square feet or the sunlight or any flat land. HOWEVER, if you have flat full sun land, you will save a ton of money once you learn the skills. Will take a few years. Keep in mind that money saved will be at cost of your time invested, if you wont enjoy gardening, dont do it. Whats also cool is you move, get sunlight and get to grow stuff you cant get at store.
Were can I buy plug span
$750 dollars is a sack of tomatoes in California. Beautiful garden.
I love that you included the budget for seeds etc! It would be super helpful if you included approximately costs for watering, composting, equipment etc!
Lizten- i need to know where you got those pots! Theyre big enough to hold the plant without it drying out What variety of tomatoes are those? Start saving your seed
$200 on seeds? No no no... Save your seeds year to year. You'll get plants and produce what's good in your particular climate. Look up Joseph Lofthouse. there are a few crops that need more genetic input than the small holder can provide (usually) such as sweet corn. I save see from everything. Just think what that $200 a year means to your family.
Thank you!
More!
How do u thaw them out in the microwave???
Plus water,labor, electric , fertilizer, 🤔
The peace of mind alone is worth every penny. Organic 💩 is expensive 😊
Less, actually, and you get the benefit of not having to spend that every year. Plant cover crops, top off the beds before seeding again and if you compost and can save your seeds, the yearly cost will be practically nothing.
Yeah that kind of sounds a bit high. But I don't know where you're from so it might not be high for your area.
Can Joan J raspberries being ever bearing? Ours produce all summer and fall ???
Yes, any "fall raspberry" will be everbearing if you don't prune it.
I feel like I've spent more than that in my 1200sf back yard.
Plus seeds can be planted in buckets for the house in Winter time I do it in Northern Illinois area !!! I live great with tubers tomatoes broccoli cabbage beans also bok choy also !!!
Thank you for this. I have been at a loss as to how to prune my raspberries. I’m more than happy to just remove all canes in the winter and get berries only in the fall. I’m not getting that many now anyway.
Thank you for sharing your costs as I don't think people realise how easy it is to spend a lot on gardening. 4000sq feet is roughly about 1.5 allotment plots in the UK. Which is what me and my family have. £750 dollars would be considered a lot, however, this is your own land and an investment. If you're serious about being self sustainable and thinking about the long term it will be worth it. Leaving out the tilling could possibly save you money which you could probably use on more compost instead. Then use the no dig method which is better for the soil and therefore your plants.
Never trim there in the uk mine end up 1 inch thick at bulb end
How do you preserve potatoes for the year?
If the cost is only $750, who cares; you’ll spend that in a month at Whole Foods for the same produce.
Why does it "have to be" fresh dill? Not that I'm against dill but my local grocery never has it in stock, only dried dill
Dried dill gives no flavor to pickles.
That's about 19 cents per square foot. Not bad at all for an initial year. It should not cost that much each additional year. Save seed from what you grow, make compost, mulch from waste, etc. Do the labor yourself (kids are great).
Definitely less thank you ❤
It is about right. Of course it can be done soooo much cheaper with planning. Even free if you play your cards right
+ healthy food and the pleasure of growing home-grown vegetables for your family.
was Jesus a garlic bulb?
I think for the size of your garden and how long it last....I thought it would be waaay more expensive..Good job
I spend 20$ on seeds. Also, do a seed swap. 40$ on manure. And 50 on fertilizer. Eating for the summer and half the winter is priceless.
750 for 9 months of veggies plus extra for cold storage is a steal.
Your costs will be less next year if you cost.over the next 5 years the average will be a lot less with seed saving & home composting, enjoy the journey.
Thank you so much for creating such a detailed helpful video. I was specifically on a search for how to freeze dry herbs and this is by far the best video I came across.
I wish to god that’s all mine cost me 😂😂 but everything she says is on point without question. I’m just curious about the cost for next year 😂😂
